when should i book my maternity session?

I recommend booking your maternity session during your second trimester, ideally from 20 weeks or once you know your due date. While your actual session will usually take place between 30-36 weeks, booking earlier gives you the best chance of securing a date in my calendar, especially during busier months. The sweet spot for maternity photos is generally around 32-34 weeks. By this stage, your bump is beautifully round but you're often still feeling comfortable enough to enjoy your session. Of course, every pregnancy is different. If you're expecting twins or have been advised that your baby may arrive early, we may plan your session a little sooner.

why book your maternity session early?

Booking ahead allows plenty of time to:

  • Secure your preferred date
  • Access my client wardrobe
  • Plan your session location
  • Plan outfits for the whole family
  • Enjoy the process without feeling rushed

Many of my clients choose to book both their maternity and newborn sessions together, creating a beautiful story of this chapter from pregnancy through to those first days with their baby.

choosing between an in-home or outdoor session

One of the most common questions I receive is whether it's better to have your maternity session at home or outdoors. The truth is, there isn't a right or wrong choice - it simply comes down to what feels most like you.

In-Home Maternity Sessions

An in-home maternity session offers a calm, intimate and personal feel. There's no need to travel anywhere and you can relax in the comfort of your own space. These sessions are perfect if you love a slower pace and want to document your moment in a place that already holds so much meaning. We use the natural light that fills your home and focus on genuine connection and emotion as you prepare to welcome your baby. Many parents also choose an in-home session if they already have young children, as little ones often feel more comfortable and settled in familiar surroundings.

Outdoor Maternity Sessions

Outdoor maternity sessions are ideal if you love nature and want beautiful scenery as the backdrop for your photographs. Whether it's the beach, rolling countryside, long grass fields or a favourite local spot - outdoor sessions create a relaxed and timeless feel. Most outdoor sessions take place around sunset when the light is soft, warm and flattering. This golden hour light creates the dreamy glow that many families love and allows for beautiful, natural images filled with warmth and connection.

Things to Consider

When deciding between an in-home or outdoor session, it can help to think about:

  • The style of images you are drawn to.
  • Whether you prefer the comfort of home or being outdoors.
  • The ages and routines of any young children involved.
  • The time of year and sunset times.
  • What feels most meaningful to you and your family.

WHY I PHOTOGRAPH DURING GOLDEN HOUR

Most outdoor sessions take place around sunset because the light is softer, warmer and more flattering. The harsh midday sun can create strong shadows and squinting, while golden hour creates that beautiful, dreamy glow many families love.

WHAT IF I HAVE YOUNG CHILDREN?

If you have toddlers or young children, don't worry. We'll work together to find the best option for your family. During summer, when sunset is later, some families choose an in-home session, a shaded outdoor location or schedule their session on a day when children can have a later nap and bedtime.

WHAT HAPPENS IF THE WEATHER IS BAD?

If conditions aren't suitable on the day of your session, we can simply reschedule for another date. While many families worry about cloudy skies, overcast weather can actually create beautiful, soft light that photographs wonderfully. Above all, your family's comfort and safety are always my priority and I'll always make the best decision to ensure you have a relaxed and enjoyable experience.

Can my partner and other children be included?

Absolutely. Your maternity session is about celebrating this chapter of your family's story. Partners and siblings are encouraged to be involved for part of the session. While the session will be mostly focused on you and your bump, I always set aside time for partners and other children to be included. We will usually include them at the beginning of the session.

what to wear to your maternity session

Choosing what to wear for your maternity session doesn't need to feel overwhelming. The most important thing is that you feel comfortable, confident and like yourself. I generally recommend choosing soft, neutral tones such as creams, off-whites, warm browns, beige, oatmeal, soft blacks and earthy colours. These timeless tones photograph beautifully, complement natural surroundings, suit my editing style and help keep the focus on the connection and emotion within your images rather than distracting patterns or bright colours.

For outdoor sessions, flowing dresses, linen fabrics and clothing with texture often photograph beautifully, creating movement and a soft, natural feel. For in-home sessions, simple and comfortable pieces work wonderfully and help create relaxed, timeless images. If your partner and children will be included, I recommend coordinating colours rather than matching exactly. Choosing a palette of complementary neutral tones creates a cohesive look.

To make planning even easier, I offer access to my growing client wardrobe. The collection includes a selection of beautiful maternity dresses and pieces carefully chosen to photograph beautifully and flatter a range of body shapes and stages of pregnancy. My wardrobe is continually growing, with new pieces being added regularly to give mothers even more options to choose from. Once your session is booked, I'm always happy to help with outfit planning and can provide guidance on colours, styling and coordinating the whole family so you can feel relaxed and confident leading up to your session.
